Summary recommendations -- Background -- Assessment of WHO Growth Standards within the Canadian context.
Recommendations and rationale on use of WHO Growth Standards for Canadian children.
Recommendation 1, To adopt the 2006 WHO Child Growth Standards as one component of monitoring the growth of Canadian children from birth to 5 years in the primary care, community, hospital and epidemiological setting.
Recommendation 2, To adopt the WHO Growth Reference 2007 for school-aged children and adolescents.
Recommendation 3, To adopt child growth velocity charts for weight, length, head circumference once they are released.
Recommendation 4, To reaffirm the existing recommendation for the use of BMI-for-age, starting at 2 years of age, for the purpose of screening for overweight and obesity and to now recommend use of BMI-for-age for screening of underweight starting at 2 years of age.
Recommendation 5, To utilize the following cutoffs as guidance for further assessment, referral, or treatment, but not as diagnostic criteria for classifying children -- WHO Growth Standards [Birth to 5 years] -- WHO Growth Reference [5-19 years].
Recommendation 6, To ensure knowledge translation and uptake by key organizations, training on the use and interpretation of the 2006 WHO growth charts, including the normal differences between these standards and the CDC growth references, should be provided to all health care professionals involved in measuring and assessing the growth of Canadian children.
Recommendation 7, To evaluate the growth of preterm infants within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting use the Fenton Preterm Infant growth charts until 10 weeks post-term or discharge, after which time the WHO Child Growth Standards charts should be used, utilizing age corrected for prematurity (i.e. corrected age) until at least 24 or 36 months.
Recommendation 8, That the collaborating organizations reiterate the need for a Canadian Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System for the organized and ongoing collection of anthropometric measurements to follow growth and nutritional status of individual Canadian children and describe population trends in key indicators of their nutritional status.
