Métis politics and governance in Canada

Saunders, Kelly 1964- (Author). Dubois, Janique, 1983- (Added Author).

Summary: "At a time when the Métis are becoming increasingly visible in Canadian politics, this book offers a novel and practical guide for understanding who they are, how they govern themselves, and the challenges they face on the path to self-government. The Métis have always been a political people. Kelly Saunders and Janique Dubois draw on interviews with Elders, leaders, and community members to reveal how the Métis are giving life to Louis Riel's vision of a self-governing Métis Nation within Canada. They look to the Métis language--Michif--to identify Métis principles of governance that emerged during the fur trade era and that continue to shape Métis governing structures. Both then and now, the Métis have engaged in political action to negotiate their place alongside federal and provincial partners in Confederation. As Canada engages in nation-to-nation relationships to advance reconciliation, this book provides timely insight into the Métis Nation's ongoing struggle to remain a free and self-governing Indigenous people."--

Saunders and Dubois see the Métis as a unique indigenous nation, who emerged most fully in the Northwest through conflicts. Their emphasis on them as a distinct nation that emerged through political action contrasts with historical accounts that place their origin in terms of race and hybridity and, more narrowly, in relation to their role as economic agents in the fur trade. They Métis ethnogenesis as rooted in political action and agency, and trace the continuities between historic and contemporary Métis political organizations. The Métis have regularly adapted their governance structures to changing political, social, and economic circumstances in order to more successfully pursue their objectives. Throughout the book, Saunders and Dubois focus on the contemporary governing bodies in the colonial context of the Canadian state; specifically examining the five Métis governments that make up the Métis National Council, the national spokes-body of the Métis Nation. They deepened their understanding of Métis governance through semi-structured interviews with elected Métis representatives at the local, provincial, and national levels, as well as with other advisors and officials who interact with the Métis.
