Summary: Americans spend some $3 trillion a year on health care, representing about 18 percent of the nation's gross domestic product, nearly double what other industrialized countries spend. Some people blame these high costs on big pharmaceutical companies-"Big Pharma" for short-which they accuse of charging exorbitant amounts for certain drugs and raising prices far above the rate of inflation. But others defend the companies, claiming that high prices are necessary to encourage them to develop new life-saving drugs that improve people's health. Is Big Pharma to blame for out-of-control health care costs?
