Summary:
Plains Cree is the westernmost of the Cree languages, a branch of Central Algonquian in the Algonquian language family. It is spoken primarily in Alberta and Saskatchewan on the Canadian prairies. Although the language has an estimated 10,000 speakers at the time of writing, it has not been learned by children at home for at least two generations. It is now used only in very restricted domains (e.g. some religion functions), and without a dramatic turnaround will be lost by the middle of the century.
