"The people who own themselves" recognition of Métis identity in Canada : report of the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples

Summary: This study concerns the recognition of the Métis as one of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples. It does not purport to define who the Métis are as an Aboriginal people. The committee acknowledges that the identity of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples is a matter for peoples themselves to determine. However, the committee is of the view that the issue of Métis identity must be openly discussed and better understood by the federal government and Canadians at large. Such an understanding is necessary in order to establish and maintain appropriate relations between the Métis and the federal government. This study is therefore aimed at initiating a constructive public discussion on the identity of the Métis and their recognition by the federal government for legal and policy purposes.
