Summary: Eskasoni is the home of celebrated Micmac poet Rita Joe. In a beautiful setting along the saltwater shore of the Bras D'Or Lakes of Cape Breton Island, the village of Eskasoni enjoys a revival of Native traditons and spirituality, and inspires much of Rita Joe's writing. Her voice is one of the first to express the long-hidden eloquence and natural artistry of her people. Friendliness, a positive outlook, compassion and communication--these are Rita Joe's gentle weapons in her efforts to raise our awareness and understanding of today's Native people. For twenty years her poetry and her presence have touched thousands, allowing us to feel our common dignity. As a published writer and popular public speaker, Rita Joe is a shining example to the young people of Eskasoni, an ambassador for her people, and teacher for us all.
